In the summer of 1989, Kiwanian Brigadier General Ed Dosek
and Betty were visiting Betty's birthplace when they came upon a
boulevard where all of the light poles were decorated with American
flags.
Upon returning home to Crofton he saw the Crofton
Parkway as a perfect place to display the same patriotism and
community spirit. He sought the partnership of the business owners
in making the project a reality, and in 1990 he obtained permission
to place the brackets on the county-owned light poles. As the then
President of the Crofton Civic Association, he sought and had a
resolution passed to establish a flag fund. He personally arranged
for the flags to be put up on holidays, but help at the time was
scarce.
In 1992 he asked the Pedersen family to take over the
project, and Kiwanian "Pete" Pedersen and his family have run the
project since then.
In 1995 the Kiwanis Club and Foundation
were given the responsibility for the project and took it over from
the Civic Association.Pete and his family plus other Kiwanians now
maintain and fund the 158 flags covering three and one half miles of
the parkway.
The Civic Association Board subsequently agreed
the flags would be put up on Armed Forces day in May and come down
after Veteran's Day in November.
