KIWANIS CLUB OF CROFTON NEWSLETTER
June 2005

Cole's Cogitations

This month, although late, the club will hold its annual election of officers and board of directors. June 15 is the meeting date for the election; two weeks notice is required by our bylaws.

President Cole Drew
Vice President Foundation Dennis Clark
Vice President Club Russ Smith
Foundation Treasurer Dick Kemezis
Club Treasurer Ginny Espie
Secretary Sharon Drew

Board:
Pete Pederson (2nd yr.) John Hollywood (2nd yr.)
Cheryl Malone (2nd yr.) Ed Reilly
Dan Scholfield, Steve Grimaud
Cindy Johnston

It is great to see new members step forward and participate on the board. The cry went out for members to assume leadership roles, and some of our newest members did.

Please plan on attending this meeting to vote and show support for your new officers and board members.

You will also get a chance to meet these new members in case you have not already done so.

I mentioned rules when announcing the election. There is also an attendance requirement for members in our by-laws. Last meeting there were eight attendees, including myself. This is not acceptable. How can a guest speaker be invited with this kind of attendance at meetings?

This also causes great concern as to how much participation there will be in upcoming projects and fund-raisers. Expect to see a letter soon to all members regarding committees for fund-raisers and projects. Outlined will be the schedule for the year to give you ample time to select which project(s) you as a member would like to participate in.

If none is selected, each member will be appointed to a committee. This will be for the new year 2005-06, so think about what you would like to be involved with.

Yours in Kiwanis Service,
Cole Drew

BEER AT THE CROFTON KIWANIS CRAB FEAST

Due to legal liability considerations, we no longer will be able to provide beer (or any other alcoholic beverage) at our annual crab feast. However, you may bring your own beer, and we will provide coolers for your convenience. We suggest that you mark your bottles and cans or use some other method for identifying your beer, such as placing the bottles or cans in a plastic bag that is marked for identification.

NOTICE: We assume that all of our guests who consume alcoholic beverages at our events will do so responsibly. If you intend to drive on your departure from the Crab Feast, it is a condition of your admittance that you minimize your alcohol consumption to the safe level allowable for motor vehicle operators in Maryland.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

CROFTON KIWANIS/TEAM SURLIS 10K CHALLENGE

It’s just around the corner! Saturday, June 11. This major fundraiser needs volunteers. Members can choose their favorite niche from a multitude of tasks even now, according to Marnie Fallon.

Sponsored again by Team Surlis, the race attracts runners from central Maryland, the District of Columbia, and surrounding states. It is posted on all the major race calendars throughout the area in order to attract the greatest number of runners.

Kiwanis members are needed to run as well; last year only three ran, but Team Surlis was well represented on the course. The committee looks forward to the participation of all Kiwanis members. Race day is labor intensive, but lots of fun as everyone works together.

There is a job for everyone, plus delicious refreshments (think fresh fruit, bagels, et al). Everything takes just a few hours beginning 6:00 to 6:15 a.m. early on race Saturday; then, the rest of the day you can relax. Please contact Dan Scholfield if you want to help with the water tables, parking, refreshments, filling the runners’ “goody bags,” working the finish line or clean-up.

10K Central Committee: Sharon Drew, Mickey Burlison,
Dan Scholfield, Marnie Fallon, Cherie Sheldon

ASIDES

** Any baseball team could use a man who plays every position superbly, never strikes out and never makes an error; but there’s no way to make him lay down his hot dog and come out of the grandstand.

** Philadelphia’s hotels were filled for the opening game of the 1950 World Series when a gray-haired woman came looking for a room. She finally found one across the river in Camden. “Are you a baseball fan?” asked the clerk, looking at her curiously.

“Oh, yes, indeed,” she answered eagerly. “My husband pitched the first ball in the 1924 World Series.”
The clerk looked down at the register and read: “Mrs. Calvin Coolidge, Northampton, Mass.”

** Eleven-year old Richard Earnhart, who won the National Spelling Bee some years ago, turned up with a new one:

“I enjoy reading the dictionary,” he said, “because it changes the subject so often.”
