KIWANIS CLUB OF CROFTON NEWSLETTER
July 2005
Cole's Cogitations
Becky always seems to be more than patient with me as I hold up her getting
the newsletter out, which by the way I am doing again as I write this a day
late.
June was another good month with a very successful 10K Race. Thanks to all who
were there bright and early to help. There was a great turnout of Kiwanians
including half a dozen from the Odenton Kiwanis Club. I am especially thankful
to Marnie, Mickey, Sharon, Russ Smith and Dan for pulling it all together.
Now the search starts for a 2006 10K Race chairperson. I am sure there is someone
who would like to work on a fun event such as this, and Marnie will be glad
to help with the transition. Give her a call if you are interested and get a
jump on next year.
The election took place as announced on June 22, so the new officers and board
members are in place for the next Kiwanis year starting October first. Orientations
and joint meetings of both boards will be announced so a smooth transition can
occur.
Also at our last meeting in June, we had the pleasure of making presentations
to our Teen of the Year and the Division 14 Teen of the Year. These two young
ladies have done great things already in volunteer community service.
A Key Club Presidents Council Meeting and picnic were held at Crofton Park.
Dan Scholfield adequately tended to the grill, supervised by his wife and daughter.
This event was another example of the quality of young adults involved with
community service, as representatives from several Key Clubs attended and set
project goals for the next school year.
Every month we hold the Convalescent Center Birthday Party and in July it will
change to the third Wednesday of the month at 6:00 p.m. This past party had
great attendance, 20 residents shared a cake and some songs with us.
Our next big project/event/fundraiser comes up quickly in November — the
auction. Please, pretty please, everyone keep an eye out for deals that might
make good auction items. This would give a real head start in the acquisition
phase of the auction. We will need to gear up early to have another successful
auction, which has turned into a Fall event many people look forward to.
Remember the summer schedule for meetings is the second and fourth Wednesday
each month for July, the 13th and the 27th at 7:30 p.m. The board meeting will
be held the 6th at 7:00 pm at Sharon’s house.
Keep Kiwanis service in mind and remember to consider taking a role that presents
a challenge.
Yours in Kiwanis Service,
Cole Drew

BEER AT THE CROFTON KIWANIS CRAB FEAST
Due to legal liability considerations, we no longer will be able to provide
beer (or any other alcoholic beverage) at our annual crab feast. However, you
may bring your own beer and we will provide coolers for your convenience. We
suggest that you mark your bottles and cans or use some other method for identifying
your beer, such as placing the bottles or cans in a plastic bag that is marked
for identification.
NOTICE: We assume that all of our guests who consume alcoholic beverages at our events will do so responsibly. If you intend to drive on your departure from the Crab Feast, it is a condition of your admittance that you minimize your alcohol consumption to the safe level allowable for motor vehicle operators in Maryland.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

FROM
THE SECRETARY
Hi to all, I hope you are having a nice summer so far. I am planning to do a
new master copy of the directory, for a fall printing, to put all the additions
and changes in.
No, you did not miss a new one this year; it never was printed due to Overnight
Printing making a change of address. Please e-mail me with your additions and/or
changes, so I can get it taken care of first thing in October.
The next telephone call you receive just might be from Steve Grimaud, who joined
the club this year.
Steve has agreed to chair the Halloween Parade Committee, and he is looking
for other members to join him. As many of you know, this enormously popular
parade is a very large project, and details must be worked on through the summer
to ensure its success. Please sign up to help. “Thank you, Steve, for
stepping up to the plate!”
The District Convention is scheduled to be held in Hunt Valley, Maryland, just
a “hop, skip and jump” from Crofton. Members who have not attended
a convention should plan to attend at least some part of the weekend, to see
what the District is all about. Please go to the District web site for dates
and details. These gatherings are an enjoyable way to learn more about District
Kiwanis and a great way to make new friends.
Remember that next Wednesday, July 6, is the date of the next board meeting,
and it will be held at our house. Call for directions if you plan to attend.
Sharon Drew

FAMILY NEWS
Barbara Swann appreciates the many thoughtful cards sent to her during her illness. Please continue to send them; one can never receive too many.

K-KIDS UPDATE
The K-Kids Club at Crofton Woods Elementary School completed the school year
with a great project, according to Kiwanis Advisor Sharon Drew.
The members, using art supplies furnished by the school’s art department,
made cards for the soldiers in Iraq. Using lots of glitter and imagination,
the students thanked the soldiers for being there and wishing them all well.
Dennis and Nancy Robin delivered the cards to the facility that handles the
mailing.
On another note: Jillian, one K-Kid, had her long hair cut for the third time
to donate to Locks of Love. A fifth grade student, Jillian had 10 inches of
her hair cut for wigs to be sent to patients who have lost their hair undergoing
chemotherapy.
