KIWANIS CLUB OF CROFTON NEWSLETTER

August 2005

Cole's Cogitations
Not much going on in July. Hope everyone is enjoying the summer, hot hazy and humid as usual. This coming weekend is the Capital District Convention in Hunt Valley, and several members will be in attendance to vote for the next Governor-Elect and take advantage of the training offered, but mostly to enjoy the friends made over the years.

The search goes on for a 10K Race chairperson. I am sure there is someone who would like to work on a fun event such as this, and Marnie will be glad to help with the transition. Give her a call if you are interested and get a jump on next year.

Orientation and joint meetings of both boards will be announced, so that a smooth transition will take place. The first joint board meeting will take place this Wednesday at our house at 7:30 p.m.

Monthly, the club is hosting the Convalescent Center Birthday Party. In July there was good attendance with residents sharing cake and songs with us.

Our annual Halloween parade will be held at the end of October, and Steve Grimaud is the chair this year. He will be looking soon for support in the planning and, of course, for the day of the event.

The biggest project/event/fundraiser comes up quickly in November, the Auction. Please everyone, keep an eye out for deals that might make good auction items. This would give a real head start in the acquisition phase for the auction. We need to gear up early to have another successful auction, which has turned into a Fall event people really look forward to.

Remember the summer meeting schedule continues for August. The meetings will be August 10 and 24 at 7:30 p.m. The board meeting will be August 3rd at 7:00 p.m. at Sharon’s house.

Keep Kiwanis service in mind and remember, many hands make light work.

Yours in Kiwanis Service,
Cole Drew

A NOTE FROM SECRETARY SHARON

I hope you are all having a relaxing summer. It's a good time to rest, read books, get together with friends and travel.
Cole and I have had some much loved company visiting with us and therefore our messages will be short.
The Sarah's House Dinner, Bingo and the Birthday Party at the Convalescent Center were club projects completed in July. They were planned and attended by just a few members. Thanks to all who were there, and please put the August dates on your calendars.

The club did meet last week during the storm. Unfortunately, so few were there we adjourned early and went to eat.

It is important to get to the meetings if you are in town, and available, and more importantly, to volunteer to help with the projects. Did you know a woman who turned 109 last month was at the birthday party? Everyone wins at Bingo! And I hear the food prepared for Sarah's House smells wonderful!

Finally, this weekend is the District Convention. If you have not been to one, I strongly suggest going. It will be held at the Hunt Valley Inn in Hunt Valley. Call Tom and Marnie or Cole and me for information.

And please call or stop by my house to purchase the "Ducky Derby" tickets. The cost is $5 for one or $10 for three. The money goes to the Pediatric Trauma Centers at the seven Children's Hospitals in the Capital District. The cash prizes are $500, $400, $300, $200, $100 and more. We still have a lot of tickets for sale.

I sincerely hope to see all of you at the next regular meeting, August 10th. Remember, there is a Board Meeting at our house this week. Of course, you know all are welcome at the board meetings.

SPOOKS AND GOBLINS AROUND THE CORNER

New club member (and president of the Crofton Civic Association) Steve Grimaud is chairing the annual Halloween Parade, one of the club’s most anticipated civic activities. This enormously popular parade is a very large project, and its many details are worked out during the summer to ensure a successful event.

It is now August. Please sign up to help before, during and after the parade. Volunteers have as much fun as the many ghosts and ghoulies participating.

Many thanks to Steve for accepting this responsibility.

DISTRICT CONVENTION SCHEDULED THIS MONTH

The District Convention will be held in Hunt Valley, Maryland, just a “hop, skip and jump” from Crofton from August 4-7.

Members who have not attended a convention should plan to attend at least some part of the weekend to learn what the District is all about. Please go to the District web site for dates and details. These gatherings are an enjoyable way to learn more about District Kiwanis and a great way to make new friends.

SUMMER MEETING CHANGE NOTICE

Only two meetings will be held in August, on the second and fourth Wednesdays at Waugh Chapel at 7:30 p.m.

The board of directors will meet August 3 at Sharon’s house at 7:30 p.m.

In September the club will resume its regular weekly meetings.

FAMILY NEWS

### Sincere sympathy is expressed to Mary Vroom and her family on the death of Ollie in Virginia. A longtime member of the club, Ollie was well known for his rich baritone leading the opening song at meetings. He had a distinguished career in the government and the military.

### Barbara Swann is regaining strength following her treatments. She has mentioned how very much your prayers and thoughts continue to encourage her.

2005 COMMEMORATIVE ORNAMENT AVAILABLE

Chair Marnie Fallon will sell the 2005 ornament featuring historic Linthicum Walks at meetings and during the annual Fall Festival on the Village Green. Call Marnie at 410-451-3998.

SALLY FOSTER IS COMING TO TOWN
(sung to the tune, “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”)

Chairperson Nancy Haseltine’s lyrics continue, “You better not pout, you better not cry when the paper arrives IF YOU DIDN’T BUY.”

Say you don’t need paper? How about candy, fancy toiletries, tins of delectable nuts — say, for last minute gifts or hostess gifts?

The Sally Foster catalog of wondrous items will be at your doorstep soon.

Remember, Kiwanis gets 50% of all sales: a terrific fundraiser.

NOVEMBER DEFINED

According to the Kiwanis Club of Crofton “dictionary,” the first choice of definition for November is: CHARITY AUCTION.

Chairman Dennis Clark is hard at work, assisted by Nancy: the terrific twosome in charge of the largest club fundraiser of the year.

While shopping, look for must-have items and buy them and donate to the club. Auction-goers are interested in anything and everything.

The annual auction is a one-stop shopping event for holiday and/or year-round gifts. Think of that while out on errands, vacation trips, crafts shows, etc.,

OUR FRIEND IN SPACE

Astronaut Wendy Lawrence, currently circling the earth in the space shuttle Discovery, spoke to our Kiwanis Club after she was first selected to be an astronaut. Those of your who remember meeting in the Olympics Room of the Crofton Country Club may recall her remarks about her training experiences.

ABOUT ANOTHER CROFTON
(from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Crofton Park is a place in the London Borough of Lewisham. Crofton Park was known in Roman times as Coruftonium Broccolensis. It was the military headquarters of the XXVI legio Leviscammensis (Lewisham) established in around 125 AD during the visit to Britain by the Emperor Hadrian, who was impressed by the strategic position of Hilly Fields (Campi Collienses) and who established a legionary fort on the site of the Brockley Jack (Iacopus Broccolensis).

OUR CROFTON
(from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Crofton is a census-designated place in Anne Arundel County, with the 2000 census reporting a total population of 20,091 made up of 5,478 families in 7,573 housing units.
At that reporting, the median income for a household was $75,046, with a median income for a family of $87,267.
And that was five years ago.
